| Description: |
Award winning Aberystwyth Arts Centre is Wales’ largest arts centre and
recognized as a 'national flagship for the arts'. It has a wide-ranging artistic
programmed, both producing and presenting, across all art forms including drama,
dance, music, visual arts, applied arts, film, new media, and community arts and
is recognized as a national centre for arts development. They welcome over
650,000 visitors a year, including over 100,000 attendances for performing arts
and events featuring local, national and international work, 236,000 for
exhibitions and over 100,000 for their unique community arts and education
programmed.
In 2000 the Arts Centre completed a major £4.3 million redevelopment and they
are currently undertaking an additional £1.75 million development which will add
an artists and creative industries studios complex as well as dance studios and
performance spaces which will be the base for a new major artists in residence
programmed. This will give Aberystwyth Arts Centre a range of facilities
unrivalled throughout much of the UK. The Arts Centre is a department of
Aberystwyth University, and sits at the heart of the university's campus, with
stunning views over the town of Aberystwyth and along the coastline of Cardigan
Bay.
Now the Centre is almost unrecognizable from the early days in terms of both
activity and size! In order to house the increasingly busy programmed, a
successful £4.3 million redevelopment project was completed in April 2000 which
enabled substantial development of new facilities. These included purpose built
workshop spaces - pottery studio, digital, darkroom, video suite, recording
studio and music rooms - plus a new 120 seated cinema, dance studios, studio
theatre (125 seats), a new Grade 1 gallery (taking the total to four) plus total
refurbishment of the theatre foyer, bars, craft shop and bookshop. Architect of
the redevelopment, Peter Roberts, managed to fully integrate the 'old' venue
with the new, to create a building which is open, spacious and welcoming, and
which boast facilities unrivalled throughout the UK.
