The ancient Roman ceramics

24.jpgThe most interesting productions of Roman ceramics are characterized primarily in that they are cast, rather than touring (hence the name “sigilée” which comes from the seal). It is recognizable by its beautiful red color (due to the use of a clay rich in iron oxide, lustrous and baked in oxidizing atmosphere) and its most decorated in relief. Three centers are illustrated: Arezzo in Etruria (sigillée arétine), and Lezoux Graufesenque in Gaul.
