State Key Laboratory of High Performance Ceramics and Superfine Microstructure was founded in 1988 upon the approval of both the State Planning Commission and the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The laboratory, located in the busy urban district of Shanghai, has been opened to all over the word since 1989 and becomes the base of knowledge invention and high technique developments.



Professor Jingkun Guo, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), heads the laboratory’s academic committee consisted of 23 well-known scientists. The committee supervise our research and give comments of the open subjects. Professor Jianlin Shi serves as the present director of the laboratory. Currently, the laboratory has 64 staff members, 12 supporting staff members, and 35 guest scientists, with three academicians of CAS, two academicians of CAE, and 10 “distinguished young scientists”. Meanwhile there are 114 Ph.D. candidates, 25 Master candidates and 4 post-doctoral fellows who are studying and working in the laboratory.

The laboratory is mainly engaged in the high performance and superfine microstructures studies associated with newly developed inorganic materials. Close attention is paid to the new development of the international academic community and research fields are expanded accordingly. The research activities are focused on four areas: inorganic nanomaterials, structural designation and properties of advanced ceramics,the preparation sciences and techniques, and the novel materials and its calculation sciences.



In recent years, the laboratory has undertaken a lot of national fundamental or applied fundamental research projects since its establishment, such as 973 Projects, 863 High Tech. Projects, the Climbing Projects, and Major or Key Projects of NSF of China. A series of impressive achievements have been obtained in the research areas mentioned above. More than 150 papers per year are published on the domestic and international academic journals, including “Angew. Chem. Int. Ed.”, “Adv. Mater”, “J. Am. Chem. Soc.”, “Appl. Phys. Lett.” , and “Chem. Mater.”. A good many prizes issued by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shanghai Municipality, and some other foundations were awarded to the laboratory.
