s11.jpgThe son of Dutch immigrant, he was approached by early graphic arts. Straight out of the Art Academy of Cincinnati, he worked with Karl Langenbeck in 1886 in the Avon Pottery, before joining the Rookwood Pottery in 1887. Julian departure for the Art Academy, then Beaux Arts de Paris in 1893. After a brief stint in Italy in 1894 to study painting, he returned to Cincinnati in 1896 where he spent three years at Rookwood.

His frail health forced him to leave for Colorado in 1899, where he set up his kiln in full operation in August 1901. In four years of production, VAN BRIGGLE collected medals and awards in major international events. From his works, then reflected its potential, rich experiences and European influences, totally imbued with the Art Nouveau style. It uses that color has become its own: a subtle turquoise borrowed from the Ming dynasty, it declined in different shades.

When he died, pottery has fourteen employees, and his wife Anne LAWRENCE GREGORY (1868-1929) the operation until 1912. The pottery was reorganized in 1910 to become the VAN BRIGGLE POTTERY AND TILE COMPANY. She suffered successive bankruptcy in 1913, a takeover in 1915, a fire in 1919, then many vicissitudes until today when, still active, it re among other models of its founders.
