Worldwide Ceramics Research Group

Department of Chemistry of Materials, formerly known as the Institute of Polymer Technology and Materials has roots dating back nearly 40 years and during that time we have contributed to the development and application of knowledge in science and engineering materials through teaching, scholarship and research. Our philosophy is based on the technical implementation and use of materials that, once processed, are altered in the structure and properties. This includes design considerations and business impact. Read More…

Formulating Glazes by Richard A. Eppler

It once was common practice for potters to use low-fire glazes containing lead oxide. Today, this is no longer feasible for a studio potter or a small production pottery in the United States. It is just too expensive to install all the facilities needed to handle lead oxide safely and to dispose of any wastes that are contaminated with lead oxide. Fortunately, recent advances in glaze-making technology have made it possible to formulate aesthetically interesting, durable glazes for most studio situations. Read More…

Weller Clad Hypol

Weller CLAD HYPOL™ is an exciting new product from Weller that has been engineered to handle impact and high abrasion while promoting continuous flow. Developing a quality product that can tackle all three of these issues and provide for an useful service life can be extremely challenging, but Weller has solved this dilemma through a combination of chromium carbides, manganese, and vanadium in an iron base that are metallurgically bonded to steel with a low temperature fusion process to maintain the integrity of the materials. Advanced ceramic manufacturers, Manufacturing Capabilities

Dry Pressing
Dry pressing is generally used for high volume production at low unit cost. Fully automatic presses ranging from 2 to 250 tonne capacity, used in conjunction with tungsten carbide tooling and carefully controlled firings, ensure the highest quality and uniformity. Pressings can be produced in a wide variety of shapes and sizes to suit customers’ individual requirements.

Isostatic Pressing
This is a VZS//Seagoe speciality and is used where the size, shape or batch size of components makes dry pressing impracticable or uneconomical. We have a wide range of isostatic mandrels available, offering customers economic manufacture of standard tubular forms.

Machining Before Firing
Parts formed by isostatic and die pressing can be readily machined in the green (unfired) prior to firing. Machining operations include sawing, conventional CNC Milling machines are used to carry out complex finishing operations using diamond tools. Other methods of manufacture include slip casting & extrusion.

Post Firing Processes

Grinding, lapping, polishing & honing are carried out using diamond abrasives. These techniques are used to obtain tight control of dimensions and surface finishes.

C.N.C Grinding
By glazing ceramic components the surface area can be kept clean and free from debris. Coloured glazes are also available for identification purposes. Glazes used to resist the metallising temperatures can also be supplied

Metallising & Brazing
We offer ceramic components that are metallised to suit customer requirements. Various options are available including moly-manganese + silver. Advice is available from our qualified material scientists and chemists regarding the metallising & brazing of product to customer design.

How to remove thinnest ceramic tile

How to remove thinnest tile: Well, we have good news and bad news about it. The good news is that it can be done. The bad news is that it will take time and patience, and the end may simply not worth it, especially if you need to keep all the tiles for reuse, and some broke in the process. Both adhesives are organic ceramic tile mastic base and cement-based thinnest. Mastic is used where there will be plenty of moisture, because it tends to absorb over time and loses its bond. It has been used successfully in the shower, but depending on the quality of the facility may only last 3-6 years. Read More…
